There are some 5,000 Mayan immigrants in the New Bedford, a community that has become established there over the last decade. Mostly undocumented immigrants, these are people who work throughout the city’s famed fishing industry, and have been consistently targeted as victims of violent crime. Because many are undocumented, they do not speak up. Thus, the crimes are nearly invisible to the general population.
