Julian is concerned about the churchgoers, mostly people of Mayan origin from Guatemala, yet some are also from El Salvador, Honduras, the Dominican Republic. He has seen young men hanging around outside the church when the evening service ends, and people have been attacked in the past. Some of them have cars, though many do not. Julian wishes he had the funds to purchase a van, with 15 seats or so, so that he could accompany these people home in peace.

“This is my question,” he says. “These people are driving cars, but they are going to work – to work! – to church, to the laundromat, to PriceRite. My question is, why do the police stop them – the workers?! – and check to see if they have a license, check their papers. And yet they can’t control all the people who walk the streets, day and night, people who don’t work, but are only out looking for a Mayan person to rob.“

"Why is that?”
