Mary Beth is a committed educator, extending her passion for building authentic individual and community narratives into the classroom. For ten years, she has led the “Documenting Cultural Communities” photo project with third graders at the International Charter School. The dual-language immersion school serves immigrant and native-born students in Rhode Island, and teaches in the languages of the school community: English, Spanish and Portuguese. The narrative photography and writing project equips students from all over the world to explore notions of culture, community, family, and identity by using their own lives as primary texts.
In collaboration with ICS Director Julie Nora, Mary Beth published an analysis of this work, “Seen from Within,” in “Art as a Way of Talking for Emergent Bilingual Youth,” published by Routledge Press and available for purchase here.
